On Monday, July 26, 2019, Anacostia Coordinating Council (ACC) Executive Director Philip Pannell, moderated the renewed launch effort for the previously sunsetted Washington Highlands Civic Association. The meeting took place at the Merrick Center, 4275 4th Street SE, Washington, DC 20032 from 6 pm to 8 pm.
Neighborhood attendees agreed to restart the civic association. ACC has actively been pushing for the revitalization of Ward 8 neighborhood civic associations as a means of stabilizing existing neighborhoods and as a response to rapid economic changes and gentrification. ACC has helped revitalize the Bellevue and Hillsdale associations, which now hold regularly scheduled meetings. The archives of the Federation of Civic Associations reveal that former Ward 8 Councilmember Wilhelmina Rolark was a driving force in the previous incarnation of the Washington Highlands Civic Association. ANC 8D Commissioner Olivia Henderson is the convener for upcoming meetings. Officers will be elected once the restored organization’s bylaws have been created and approved. Meetings will occur on the fourth Monday of every month.
