The Divide: What Happens When the Rich Get Richer?
Smithsonian's Anacostia Community Museum
1901 Fort Place, SE
Washington, DC 20020
Wednesday, November 20, 2019
11:00 AM – 1:00 PM EST
The Divide looks at wealth inequality in the U.S. and the U.K., telling the story of seven individuals striving for a better life.
About this EventThe Divide takes a deeply personal look at wealth inequality, telling the story of seven individuals striving for a better life in the modern-day U.S. and U.K. — where the top 0.1% owns as much wealth as the bottom 90%. There's Wall Street psychologist Alden, who wants to make it to the top 1%; KFC worker Leah from Virginia, who just wants to make it through the day; and Jen in Sacramento, California, who doesn’t talk to her neighbors in her upscale gated community because they’ve made it clear she isn’t “their kind.”
Weaving these stories and others with stunning footage and commentary from experts like Noam Chomsky, The Divide shows how virtually every aspect of our lives is controlled by one factor: the size of the gap between rich and poor. The film is inspired by the critically acclaimed, best-selling book The Spirit Level by Richard Wilkinson and Kate Pickett.
The film will be followed by a discussion led by Dr. Kilolo Kijakazi, Institute Fellow at the Urban Institute. Dr. Kijakazi wrote the research report, The Color of Wealth in the Nation’s Capital, a joint publication of the Urban Institute, Duke University, The New School, and the Insight Center for Community Economic Development.
This program is in collaboration with the Anacostia Coordinating Council.

![]() A message from DC Vote
9/19/19. A date that will be long remembered. The Congressional hearing on the Washington DC Admission Act is a very big deal. It is the result of our campaign starting with the 86% yes vote for statehood November 2016. It is the result of our ambitious and successful plan to break every record in number of co-sponsors, of presidential candidates endorsing statehood, of 20 state Attorney Generals endorsing statehood, of our work building new alliances with the national voting rights movement -- all this leads us to now. The hearing presents a critical opportunity to show Congress that the people of DC seriously want to become a state. Hundreds of people channeling our long-held frustration into showing up on 9/19 is a powerful demonstration of our desire to end taxation without representation. Seize this historic moment, plan to attend! Also critically important, spread the word. Copy the flyer, email it out. Stop by our office to pick some up and distribute at your farmers market, house of worship, door to door in your neighborhood. For more action ideas, go to at our #ShowUp4DC website! |

Washington Highlands Civic Association Monthly Meeting
4275 4th St SE
Washington, DC 20032
Monday, August 26, 2019
6:00 pm to 7:00 pm
News:
On Monday, July 26, 2019, Anacostia Coordinating Council (ACC) Executive Director Philip Pannell, moderated the renewed launch effort for the previously sunsetted Washington Highlands Civic Association. The meeting took place at the Merrick Center, 4275 4th Street SE, Washington, DC 20032 from 6 pm to 8 pm.
Neighborhood attendees agreed to restart the civic association. ACC has actively been pushing for the revitalization of Ward 8 neighborhood civic associations as a means of stabilizing existing neighborhoods and as a response to rapid economic changes and gentrification. ACC has helped revitalize the Bellevue and Hillsdale associations, which now hold regularly scheduled meetings.
The archives of the Federation of Civic Associations reveal that former Ward 8 Councilmember Wilhelmina Rolark was a driving force in the previous incarnation of the Washington Highlands Civic Association.
ANC 8D Commissioner Olivia Henderson is the convener for upcoming meetings. Officers will be elected once the restored organization’s bylaws have been created and approved. Meetings will occur on the fourth Monday of every month.

Community Screening of Amazing Grace - Aretha Franklin
Allen Chapel AME Church 2498 Alabama Ave. SE Washington, DC 20020 Friday, August 16, 2019 7:00 PM – 9:30 PM EDT Sponsored by the Smithsonian Anacostia Community Museum and Anacostia Coordinating Council (ACC) Description REGISTRATION DOES NOT GUARANTEE A SEAT. SEATING IS ALWAYS AVAILABLE ON A FIRST-COME, FIRST-SERVED BASIS. DOORS OPEN AT 6:30 PM - Allen Chapel AME Church In early 1972 at the age of 29, Aretha Franklin performed a live gospel concert over two nights at the New Temple Missionary Baptist Church in the infamous Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. The concert, which was filmed and directed by Oscar winner Sydney Pollack (Tootsie, Out of Africa) would lay in obscurity for over 30 years never to be seen in theaters. In Spring 2019, the film, titled Amazing Grace was finally released in theaters to nationwide acclaim. The film's soundtrack would become the biggest selling disc of Franklin's career as well as the highest selling live gospel music album of all time. It also won the 1973 Grammy Award for Best Soul Gospel Performance. Although a Detroit native, Franklin had a strong affiliation to DC, having performed in the nation's capital numerous occasions including at the inauguration of three U.S. presidents. The museum invites you to view this amazing film tribute to the "Queen of Soul" on August 16th, the one-year anniversary of Franklin's death. This program is funded in part by the D.C. Commission on the Arts & Humanities, an agency supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts and presented in partnership with Allen Chapel AME Church, and in collaboration with the Anacostia Coordinating Council (ACC). This special program is being presented in recognition of Smithsonian Year of Music 2019. Watch the trailer For more information call 202.633.4844. RSVP here. |

Washington Highlands Civic Association Launch Effort
at the Merrick Center 4275 4th Street, SE Monday, July 29th, 2019 6 pm to 8 pm, Dear Friends, It is no exaggeration to state that the Washington Highlands neighborhood has not had a civic association representing the entire neighborhood in nearly 30 years. During recent years, some of the homeowners in the southern part of Washington Highlands formed a civic association to represent that portion of the neighborhood but it is my understanding that it is defunct. The Anacostia Coordinating Council (ACC) will launch an effort to form the Washington Highlands Civic Association on Monday, July 29th, 6 pm to 8 pm, at the Merrick Center, 4275 4th Street, SE. Your participation in this effort will be critical and please forward this invitation to your Washington Highlands neighbors. The ACC thanks Advisory Neighborhood Commission 8D chairwoman Olivia Henderson for her assistance in organizing the July 29th meeting. A flier will be available by the end of this week. Yours for community progress, Philip Pannell ACC Executive Director |

DECADE OF FIRE Christ United Church 900 4th St, SW Washington, DC 20024 Friday, June 21, 2019 Doors open at 6:15 - Movie at 6:30 In the 1970s, the Bronx was on fire. Abandoned by the city government, nearly a half-million people were displaced as their close-knit, multiethnic neighborhood burned, reducing the community to rubble. While insidious government policies caused the devastation, Black and Latino residents bore the blame. In this story of hope and resistance, Bronx native Vivian Vazquez exposes the truth about the borough's sordid history and reveals how her embattled and maligned community chose to resist, remain and rebuild. Followed by discussion with Vivian Vazquez, along with Empower DC and the Latino Economic Development Center Child care upon request - please RSVP by June 20 to Sabiyha at (202) 234-9119 x 107 or Sabiyha@empowerdc.org |

What all is this about?
This part of DOEE's activity starts with the Clean Water Act, enacted on October 18, 1972. The Clean Water Act ensures that all Americans have water that is safe to drink. Where water quality problems exist, states must have plans in place to clean up their act.
Our major watershed, or area where multiple bodies of water collect to flow into the Anacostia and Potomac, is the Chesapeake Bay.
When rain falls, water washes pollution from roadways, parking lots, sidewalks, etc. into storm drains, which end up in our rivers. Sometimes, on rainy days, sewage can also overflow causing another source of potential contamination.
In response to this, the Environmental Protection Agency of the federal government, required DC to work with DC Water to fix the problem. In 2013 the agency began construction of a deep underground tunnel system for its "Clean Rivers Project." The $2.4 billion, 20-year project will reduce CSOs by 96 percent overall and 98 percent in the Anacostia River. Once operational, the tunnel system will store the combined sewage during wet weather and release it gradually for treatment at Blue Plains.[13] (Wikipedia).
This is where the Clean Rivers Impervious Area Charge (CRIAC) comes from that DC residents see on their water bills.

Combined sewer system. During dry weather (and small storms), all flows are handled by the publicly owned treatment works (POTW). During large storms, the relief structure allows some of the combined stormwater and sewage to be discharged untreated to an adjacent water body. (Drawing from EPA)

Come see as we take the Anacostia Playhouse under the sea where we'll meet all kinds of denizens of the deep! Under the steady hand of director Sisi Reid, music director Daniel Flores and choreographer La'Nora Smith, our cast of characters is busy learning to sing, dance and act all at the same time... and they are nailing it.
Many of our cast members are Playhouse veterans who have appeared in all of our shows since we kicked off the youth program with The Trial of the Big Bad Wolf. But you will also see a lot of new faces on stage as we welcome first-timers to our Playhouse family. The cast includes Kameron Allen, Kevin Allen, Kyron Allen, Ta'Leah Allen, Tyler Branch, Aydan Covin, Kaylan Covin, Aidan Halidou, Leaira Moore, James Muie, Sage O'Brien, Riley Raspberry, Darius Redo, Sonia Parham, Duran Tazewell, Xuan Tilghman-Phillips, Jackson Waddy, Raegan Waddy, Tanji White, Destiny Whitfield, Zoë Witherspoon. And we couldn't do any of it without talented design and production team: Lighting Design, John Alexander; Costume Design, Nora Dahlberg; Set Design, Megan Holden; Scenic Painting and Properties, Beth Baldwin; Assistant Director, Agyeiwaa Asante; Stage Manager, Rachel Walsh; Photographer and Videographer, Jabari Jefferson. There are only five performances, so make plans now to bring the whole family and come out and support these hard working young actors. April 25-28, 2019. Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7:30 and matinees at 2pm Saturday and Sunday. From the Desk of Earl Williams
DC Federation of Citizens Associations President’s Letter- March 2019 Dear Members and Friends, Last week, a bill was introduced in the Senate to grant DC Statehood. We had a record 30 Senators supporting Statehood last session. Eleanor Holmes Norton introduced a new statehood bill on the first day of the new Congress (H.R. 51) with a record 155 cosponsors, representing 38 States and 3 territories. This is the largest number of House members who have ever cosponsored a statehood bill. On January 4, 2019, Speaker Pelosi issued a statement in support of statehood. Support for statehood was also included in H.R. 1, the Democratic caucus’s landmark democracy reform bill. If the Democrats take the Senate in November 2020, there is a very good chance Congress might approve statehood for the residential and commercial parts of the District with the federal enclave in the center remaining the District of Columbia, the seat of government of the United States. The Citizens Federation in collaboration with the Civic Federation will hold a panel discussion on the issues statehood will pose for the residents of our city. We believe the pros and cons of statehood should be discussed. The panel will be held on March 26 at 441 4th Street NW from 6:30 PM till 8:30 PM. The meeting is open to the public. Please distribute this invitation widely. Best Regards, Earl Williams President dccitizensfederation.org |

YOU ARE INVITED TO
AN ANACOSTIA CONNECTION SERIES LUNCHTIME PROGRAM
Tuesday, March 5, 2019 at the Woman’s National Democratic Club with
GEORGE DEREK MUSGROVE
Co-Author of Chocolate City:
A History of Race and Democracy
In the Nation’s Capital
Who will be speaking on:
The Origins of East of the River: Centering Anacostia in DC History
The Anacostia River effectively splits Washington into two separate and unequal parts. To its north and west, the monuments of the federal city and the disproportionately white affluent neighborhoods of NW. To its south and east, some of the poorest and blackest neighborhoods in the city and large disruptive municipal agencies like the water treatment plant. Cut off physically and psychologically from the rest of Washington, these “East of the River” communities have suffered from political neglect, economic deprivation, and social isolation. Was this always the case? How did it become so? Dr. Musgrove will answer these questions through an exploration of the history of the term "east of the river."

There will be a book sale and signing after the program.

Highlighting African-American History February is Black History Month, and many of our national parks bring African-American stories to life year-round. Honoring the contributions of individuals like Mary McLeod Bethune and Frederick Douglass, national parks also share stories of groups like the Buffalo Soldiers. After the Civil War, black soldiers were able to enlist as regulars, rather than volunteers, in the U.S. Army for the first time. The enlisted were valiant soldiers and some of the country’s first park rangers! There will be a special presentation by Dr. DeWitt S. Williams:
Firsts are always important. We don't know that something can be done until someone accomplishes the impossible and shows the way. Black women in America have always faced the double obstacles of gender and race. But in 1921, within 9 days of each other, three Black women fulfilled an impossible dream. They each earned a doctorate from White, Ivy League universities, becoming the very first Black ladies to receive their doctorates. Two were born in Washington D. C. and all three attended M Street High School or its predecessor (The Preparatory High School for Colored Youth). Dr. Eva B. Dykes, Dr. Georgiana R. Simpson (she was born in Barry Farm of slave parents) and Dr. Sadie Tanner Mossell Alexander were pioneers and showed the world and other "colored" females that their minds were as sharp as any White male scholar. In succeeding years many other Black women would draw inspiration from these three ladies and follow their example. Dr. Williams presents a powerful PowerPoint presentation on these three ladies and the many obstacles they overcame to realize their dreams. Dr. DeWitt S. Williams is a retired minister, missionary, and health educator. His very first book was about one of these pioneers, Dr. Eva B. Dykes, who was his college teacher. Dr. Williams has written nine books and traveled to all 50 states and 110 countries. His well- illustrated PowerPoint presentation is excellent for Black History Month, Women’s History Month, National Education Week or other times of year when an inspirational talk is needed. Having always loved to sing and perform in talent shows and at local events, she went to the Center of Expression in the Arts to study acting in 1982.
