It’s the deep south in 1948 and Daisy Werthan has just demolished another car. Over her protestations, her son Boolie has hired Hoke Coleburn, a black man, to be her chauffeur. So begins a 25-year relationship that starts with distrust at the dawn of the civil rights era, but through the years grows into a loving interdependence neither could have predicted (or admit to).

SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION:
GSA intends to prepare a SEIS to analyze the potential impacts resulting from the proposed Master Plan Amendment #2 to support the DHS Headquarters consolidation at the St. Elizabeths West Campus. Background In 2008 and in 2012, GSA completed Environmental Impact Statements that analyzed the impacts from the development of 4.5 million square feet of secure office space, plus parking, in the District of Columbia to support the consolidated headquarters of the DHS on the St. Elizabeths East and West Campuses. GSA is preparing a SEIS to assess the impacts of development of the consolidated headquarters on the West Campus of St. Elizabeths. The proposed action is needed to improve efficiency, reflect the current condition of the historic buildings, reduce costs, and accelerate completion of the DHS consolidation. Previous St. Elizabeths Master Plans and Environmental Impact Statements are available for review at http://stelizabethsdevelopment.com/nepa.html. Alternatives Under Consideration GSA will analyze a range of alternatives (including the no action alternative) for the proposed Master Plan Amendment #2 of the DHS Headquarters at St. Elizabeths. This Master Plan Amendment will focus on development options to efficiently house DHS and its operating components on the St Elizabeths West Campus. Scoping Process A scoping process will be conducted to aid in determining the alternatives to be considered and the scope of issues to be addressed, for identifying the significant issues related to the proposed Master Plan Amendment, in accordance with NEPA and NHPA. Written Comments Interested parties are encouraged to provide written comments on the SEIS and Section 106 processes. The scoping period begins on November 19, 2018 and ends on December 19, 2018. Comments received during the scoping period will be considered in the analyses to be conducted for the SEIS. Written comments regarding the SEIS must be postmarked no later than December 19, 2018, and sent to the following address: Mr. Paul Gyamfi, Office of Planning and Design Quality, Public Buildings Service, National Capital Region, U.S. General Services Administration, 301 7th Street SW, Suite 4004, Washington, DC, 20407; or by email: Paul.Gyamfi@gsa.gov using the subject line: St. Elizabeths Master Plan Amendment #2. Krista Schlyer - River of Redemption: Almanac of Life on the Anacostia — at Politics and Prose at Union Market
Author reading and book signing Politics and Prose at Union Market 1270 5th Street NE Washington, DC 20008 Friday, November 16, 2018 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. "As with so many rivers nationwide, the Anacostia has suffered serious environmental degradation over the years. But despite the neglect, this waterway remains magnificent in many ways, and Schlyer, a nature writer and photographer who won the National Outdoor Book Award, the Ansel Adams Award for Conservation Photography, and other accolades for Continental Divide, spent seven years photographing and researching the Anacostia for this beautiful and poignant tribute. Combining history and natural history with stunning images, Schlyer documents both our destructiveness and our efforts at restoration, working to foster a new relationship between us and this once-and-future natural treasure." ACC is passing along an important message from a coalition of faith organizations dedicated to help relieve the disproportionate burden of these fees on faith institutions and non-profits. It is extremely important that concerned organizations be represented at this meeting.
Here is the text of the reminder:
This is a reminder message regarding an upcoming meeting to discuss DC Water's new CRIAC Relief Program for churches and non-profits. Please share this email with other members of the faith community who have churches within the District.
Coalition Friends and Colleagues,
It has been quite some time since our last communication, but that does not mean our efforts to fight DC Water’s CRIAC fees have ceased.
We are pleased to share that the District government has allocated funds for a Relief program for churches to defray their CRIAC fees, which is expected to be implemented later this year. We invite you to join us for a meeting next Wednesday, Oct. 31 at 10 a.m. at the 6th and I Historic Synagogue, located at 606 I (Eye) St. NW (this is a slight address change) where the program will be discussed in detail. It is very important for every religious institution, church or house of worship interested in reducing their CRIAC payments to have a representative present. We want to make sure that you are prepared to apply for funding as soon as the program is rolled out. DOEE's Matt Johnson will join Coalition representatives in explaining the program in detail including eligibility requirements and how to apply.
If your church will be represented, please send your RSVP to either Craig Muckle at mucklec@adw.org or Darcy Hirsh at dhirsh@jcouncil.org by Monday, Oct. 29 at 12 p.m.
For additional information and background, read this Faith Community page below, and visit the DC Water website discussing the background of Clean Rivers program and CRIAC.

Join us for a screening of the latest WETA-TV 26 film in the Washington Series, Washington in the 90’s. A discussion immediately follows the film. The film is a great link to the museum’s current exhibition, A Right to the City, which explores the history of neighborhood change in the nation’s capital.
Washington in the ‘90s is the latest documentary in a series produced by WETA TV 26, exploring Greater Washington from decade to decade, part of WETA’s continuing mission to produce television that serves our community. Carrying on the tradition of WETA documentaries Washington in the ‘60s, Washington in the ‘70s and Washington in the ‘80s, the program chronicles the seminal local events of the decade through the recollections of those who saw and shaped them. Washington in the ‘90s features the highs, lows, and everything in-between — taking viewers back to a time not long ago, yet which now seems a world away.
Refreshments are provided.

I apologize for the late letter but family and yesterday’s primary election combined to delay me. Voting is one of the most important things that we, as citizens, should do. Several decisions were made yesterday by a small number of voters. Personally, I would like to see Independent voters have an opportunity to vote on ballot initiatives in our primaries. Please let me know your thoughts on the matter.
The Federation recognizes the important roll ABRA plays in many of our neighborhoods. We have a great opportunity to hear from and question Donovan Anderson, Chair of ABRA, and his staff at our June 26, 2018 meeting. The meeting will be held at 441 4th Street NW from 6:30 PM till 8:30 PM. Please come and bring interested parties. Our meetings are open to the public and we encourage everyone to attend.
We are working a plan to increase the number of Federation Board members. If you are interested, please forward a bio to president@dccitizensfederation.org for consideration.
Best Regards,
Earl Williams, President

Candlelight Vigil For...
Alexander "Bundy" Mosby This Friday In The Anacostia Secret Garden @Check It Enterprises For Immediate Release: The wife, family, friends and Historic Anacostia businesses will have the official candlelight vigil celebrating the husband, father and entrepreneur Alexander "Bundy" Mosby. Alex was loved by his family and community, therefore with a abundance of love his life will be remembered with the love, class and style his always gave to his family and community. Alex's favorite saying was "Follow The Yellow Brick Road". This will be hard to stomach, but together we will get through this. The family and friends are asking our city to unite and fight against the senseless killings we have come to see on a daily basis and bring back the peace we all deserve. That's the world Alex would want for his wife, three daughters and fellow business owners to live in. For more information please call Ron Moten at 202-848-4394 |

JAYLYN WHEELER
Mother of slain youth calls on the community to join her in the Peace Walk and Vigil calling for the community to take a stand against the senseless violence in Ward 8 where homicides are up more than 40 percent. Her son was Jaylyn Wheeler, one of two Ballou students who was recently killed.
In her interview with WJLA 7 she referenced impatience with the lack of outrage at the heartbreaking fact that 70 Ballou Senior High School students have been killed since 2008. She also wants more prevention and intervention, so we can stop the trend of parents burying their children instead of their children burying the parents.
Ms. Wheeler asked community activist Ron Moten to help assist her with this and he is helping her organize today's peace walk and candlelight vigil.
The starting point will be at 22nd and Alabama Ave.S.E. because mother wanted to walk past some of the communities with conflicts that have caused violence and homicides to escalate in the District of Columbia. Participants will assemble at 6:30 PM and start the Peace Walk shortly after as they proceed to 6th and Alabama Ave. SE where Jaylyn was murdered.
This Mother needs the community support because she is numb as she has lost Jaylyn's father, and recently two cousins, all to homicide in the District of Columbia over the last year. We hope you can attend.

A Disaster, a Survivor, and a New Life
In conversation with Theater Alliance’s Flood City by Gabrielle Reisman, consider this: A Disaster, a Survivor, and a New Life.
Write the 10-minute play of their reinvention, with no more than 3 characters, that exhibits the same sense of perseverance, fear, and hope as the characters within Flood City.
A bit more about Flood City:
In Johnstown, Pennsylvania in 1889, the Great Flood has decimated the vibrant steel town, leaving behind a ragtag crew of survivors, aid workers, and surveyors to assess the damage and speculate what, or who, could be responsible. A century later, at a bar in Johnstown, recently laid off steelworkers ponder their uncertain futures in a town when industry, and the world, seems to have left them behind.
Traversing time and space, Flood City is a hopeful dark comedy about disasters, corporate (ir)responsibility, and a community’s resilience in the wake of the unimaginable.
TO SUBMIT: Email your materials to submissions@theateralliance.com with the subject line: DISASTER – YOUR NAME by Monday, May 21st, 2018.
If you are planning on submitting a piece and would like to see Flood City to get a sense of the conversation in the piece, you are welcome to one complimentary ticket to a preview performance of your choosing. Please email boxoffice@theateralliance.com and mention that you will be submitting to the Hothouse and would like to see Flood City.

Based on Shakespeare's The Tempest, The Tiniest Tempest has been created by Shakespeare For The Young as an interactive show for 4 to 10 year old children. The actors and designers of Shakespeare For The Young are dedicated to bringing Shakespeare's stories and poetry to young audiences and their families through the medium of puppets.
Four Puppeteers bring the characters of Miranda and Prospero, Antonio and Alonso, and Caliban and Ariel to life with their story of hurt and love as well as revenge and forgiveness on an island. The puppets are both large-bodied and shadow puppets. Children are introduced to a stick puppet of William Shakespeare, who helps start the story.
Aided by interactive play with the audience, the actors engage children's imaginations through Shakespeare's words, using music as an additional medium. They ask questions that invite children and their families to think about what it means to be empathetic and inclusive and forgive hurts. The workshop with ukulele and song helps children focus on dreams and friendship.

These two pictures were taken less than 200 feet apart in Suitland Parkway, another large and badly neglected wooded area in southeast DC. They show how magical urban forests can be when they are well-cared for, and how ugly and unhealthy they are when they are not.
This is where you, our volunteers, come in. When Restore Shepherd Parkway began in 2011, many areas looked like the picture on the right. Today none do.
This Earth Day, we 'll be consolidating our progress in the northern part of Shepherd Parkway. On Sunday, we will tackle the pollution in Suitland Parkway for the first time with help from the World Mission Society Church of God. The more volunteers we have, the more we can accomplish.

East River Jazz Presents Todd Marcus Jazz Orchestra
Anacostia Arts Center - Black Box Space
1231 Good Hope Road SE
Washington, DC 20020
Thursday, March 29, 2018
Shows at 8:00 p.m. & 9:30 p.m.
Get tickets here!
About the performance:
The evening’s performance presents Middle-Eastern inspired music by the Todd Marcus Jazz Orchestra. The music reflects Marcus’ embrace of his Egyptian heritage which resulted in his 2015 album Blues for Tahrir that portrayed Egypt’s 2011 revolution with a suite of compositions capturing the movement’s different phases. Tonight’s performance also includes Marcus’ ongoing efforts with new music, commissioned by a Chamber Music America award, that again integrate influences of Egypt’s classical music into his jazz compositions.
The music features Marcus’ arrangements of original compositions, which offer unique new directions in jazz. “I’ve been interested in incorporating Middle Eastern musical influences, as a way to pull something unique from my culture and fuse it with my music.” Marcus explains. “It’s been challenging because jazz and Middle-Eastern music are so different. While jazz uses a lot of rich harmony, Middle-Eastern music tends to be a lot of unison playing or over drones and if you try to add chords, it diminishes the Middle-Eastern feel of the music. So it’s taken a lot of experimenting to find ways to make this fusion of the two musics work.”
This concert features:
Todd Marcus – bass clarinet
Greg Tardy – tenor sax
Sharel Cassity – flute & alto sax
Russell Kirk – alto sax
Freddie Hendrix – trumpet
Alan Ferber – trombone
Xavier Davis – piano
Jeff Reed – bass
Eric Kennedy – drums
Irene Jalenti - vocal
All selections composed and arranged by Todd Marcus.

The R.I.S.E. Demonstration Center

Saturday March 17, 2018
2:30 – 5:00 p.m.

After ACC's participation in last year's wildly popular poetry series, the Anacostia Coordinating Council (ACC) is pleased to partner with Day Eight, as part of the Spring 2018 DC Poet Project, to offer a poetry event, featuring Regie Cabico and Anne Becker, to reflect on the memories of 1968.
In his 1967 book, Martin Luther King, Jr. asked us to consider, Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community? King’s question, and the fiftieth anniversary of his assassination, are all too relevant today, and we invite you to offer your own poetic reflections, and to enjoy those of others, at this event.
Hosted by the Anacostia Coordinating Council, poets Cabico and Becker will read selections from their poetry, followed by an open mic at which community members are asked to share their poetry related to Dr. King’s question: Community or Chaos?
This event is a “DC Poet Project” event, and one open mic reader will be selected the winner by ACC, Regie Cabico, and Anne Becker, and will be awarded a $100 dollar cash prize, and an invitation to compete in the final DC Poet Project event – May 5th, at the Anacostia Library – for a $500 dollar prize and book contract.

The Kenyon Review called Regie Cabico the "Lady Gaga of Poetry" and he has been listed in BUST magazine's 100 Men We Love.
Anne Becker is a poet, teacher and paper artist. Her latest collection of poetry, Human Animal, is forthcoming from Pond Road Press in 2018. el-Hajj Malik el-Shabazz/Malcolm X Assassination Observance
America's Islamic Heritage Museum 2315 Martin Luther King Jr. Ave, SE Washington, DC 20020 Wednesday, February 21, 2018 at 6:30 p.m. On February 21, 1965 el-Hajj Malik el-Shabazz (formerly known as Malcolm X) was assassinated. Next Wednesday, February 21, 2018, at 6:30 pm the Anacostia Coordinating Council (ACC) and America's Islamic Heritage Museum will host a community meeting to observe that anniversary. It will be at the museum at 2315 Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue, SE. There will be a brief interfaith prayer service followed by a discussion of the topic "Where Do We Go from Here: Chaos or Community?" (the title of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's final book). Both Malcolm X and Dr. King were homicide victims and the community discussion will focus on reducing violence in our community. Light refreshments will be served. For information contact ACC at 202-889-4900 and acc01@aol.com. In Memoriam: Peggy Cooper CafritzDear ACC Members and Supporters,
It is with deep sadness and profound regret that ACC must announce the loss of our dear friend, patron of arts, and inspirational muse to thousands of students and artists of the District of Columbia and elsewhere, Peggy Cooper Cafritz. As ACC has been announcing, with great anticipation, her graceful presence at our upcoming monthly meeting to promote her new book, we now find it difficult to contain our emotion to the news. The book, "Fired Up! Ready to Go!: Finding Beauty, Demanding Equity: An African American Life in Art. The Collections of Peggy Cooper Cafritz", is scheduled for official release on February 20th. Indeed, the upcoming ACC meeting was scheduled to be her first book talk before she launched her national tour. An obituary for Ms. Cooper Cafritz can be found at the following link on the Washington Post website.
Although the content of ACC's meeting will obviously be altered in light of the present circumstances, we hope, if it should not offend, that for the very short term, until our prayers for her spirit on her journey home and for her family have come to quiet resolution, and when we have consulted with her loved ones, and resolve to offer our participation in a fitting remembrance and tribute to a remarkable woman, that we may linger with her spirit a little longer and leave unaltered the announcement you see below.
As long as there is a creative spirit to be encouraged and nurtured, we are certain that there will her spirit be as well. Peggy, we will miss you! From all of us at the Anacostia Coordinating Council Tuesday, February 27, 2018We at ACC beg your pardon as we present, as yet unaltered but with the deepest respect, the following meeting notice of our monthly meeting, in light of the passing of our dear friend, Peggy Cooper Cafritz, who was to attend.Anacostia Coordinating Council February 2018 Monthly Meeting

Ready to Go!: Finding Beauty, Demanding Equity: An African American Life in Art. The Collections of Peggy Cooper Cafritz", that will be released on February 20th. After its release, the book will cost $75 but if it is pre-ordered the cost is less. "Fired Up! Ready to Go!" is available at area booksellers including Amazon, Barnes & Noble and others. Peggy is one of the nation's foremost collectors of African American art. Memo From: Emily Conrad
Date: Wed, Jan 17, 2018 at 2:09 PM Subject: Seeking Muralist for Frederick Douglass Bicentennial & Anacostia Park Centennial [16th & W Street SE] To: jmuller.washingtonsyndicate@gmail.com Hello artists, I am reaching out to you on behalf of John Muller (copied) who is seeking an artist to create a mural celebrating the Bicentennial of Frederick Douglass and the Centennial of Anacostia Park. Please see his message below: I'm working with Mr. Ephrame Kassaye, the new owner of the corner store at 16th & W Street SE in Old Historic Anacostia, to put up a mural on the 16th Street SE side of his building which will bring attention to, as well as honor, the Bicentennial of Frederick Douglass and the Centennial of Anacostia Park. Our ambitious plan for installation is BEFORE and/or during Saturday, Feb. 17, 2018, which is when the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site is celebrating the Douglass birthday with speakers / presenters from outside of the community. The purpose of the mural installation is to involve the local community in the Douglass Bicentennial celebration. Right now we have a stipend of minimally $400 to cover the costs of the muralist's design time and labor. This does NOT include costs of materials, which we will cover. Once a muralist is confirmed, we will start a GoFund Me drive which can only result in the value of the stipend increasing. With a fundraising effort, we hope to raise the value of the stipend to $1000. There will be an effort to generate local media attention, as well, which could bring the muralist additional recognition. I've attached photos of the wall(s) on the corner store. The mural can go on one wall and/or both. It could be a continuous mural or two separate murals. We are open to proposals and ideas, as long as the muralist can commit to making this happen. For further details and to submit a proposal please contact: John Muller 202.236.3413 jmuller.washingtonsyndicate@gmail.com Emily Conrad Director of Development (301) 699-6204, ext. 111 www.anacostiaws.org Photos of the wall(s) on the corner store. ![]() The Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development (DMPED) invites the submission of applications for the FY 18 Neighborhood Prosperity Fund (NPF) from the Economic Development Special Account pursuant to DC Official Code §2-1225.21. DMPED will also hold online Q&A sessions next week.
About the NPF: This program, now in its second round, will provide funding for non-residential components of mixed-use projects in underserved neighborhoods in the District. DMPED will award up to $3 million dollars for catalyzing mixed-used, real estate or retail development projects in targeted census tracts where unemployment is 10% or greater. The grant provides necessary gap funding only for the commercial component of development projects. The program aligns with Mayor Bowser’s economic strategy, which outlines steps the District will take to become the global model for inclusive prosperity and resilience, and showcase how diversity and innovation can drive equitable economic growth. The strategy is guided by two measurable goals, growing private sector GDP to $100 billion (by 20%) by the end of 2021, and reducing unemployment across Wards, races and educational attainment levels to below 10% across all segments by the end of 2021. DMPED welcomes submissions directly connected to these goals. Available funds: Up to $3 million is available for catalyzing mixed-use real estate project in targeted census tracts. Funding availability is dependent on the total projects costs of the selected projects. DMPED will award one or more grants for an aggregate total of $3,000,000. Awards will range between $250,000 and $750,000. Q&A Sessions: Interested parties can join DMPED for online Q&A sessions on the program next week at the following times. For community progress, Philip Pannell Executive Director Anacostia Coordinating Council What is an "Impervious Surface"?
If you are not familiar with the term "impervious surface," this picture will help explain it. As cities grow and more development occurs, the natural landscape is replaced by roads, buildings, housing developments, and parking lots. The metro Atlanta region has experienced explosive growth over the last 50 years, and, along with it, large amounts of impervious surfaces have replaced the natural landscape.
